In the 21st century, humans exert massive influence on the earth, shaping the Anthropocene. The challenges are multidimensional – ecological, economic, demographic, technological and institutional – but all of them necessitate political responses. The scale of change exceeds anything that humanity has experienced in the long history of its growth, wars, revolutions and other manifestations of ‘progress’. This new book series, Politics of the Anthropocene, documents the crucial interface between nature and societies in the moment of this dramatic transformation. Providing originality, inclusivity, and a measure of optimism, this series focuses on political rather than ecological aspects of the Anthropocene. This broad focus embraces wars, migrations, and pandemics; oil curse and other pathologies of the world order; popular awareness of the climate crisis and the mitigation measures; problems of the global South and the global North in their contrasts and interconnectedness. The series explores the role of political, social, and cultural factors such as trust, inequality, mass education, and digital work, in shaping climate action and public awareness in several countries of Europe and the Global South.
