Publication process at CEU Press

The chart below gives you a general idea about what to expect when you publish with CEU Press. There might be slight differences, especially if your book is part of one of our series. Please always consult your commissioning editor.

1
Proposal Submission
Submit a complete proposal form to a commissioning editor or series editor. You can include a sample chapter or the whole manuscript (if ready) alongside your proposal submission, but this is not essential.
2
Evaluation of Proposal
Your editor will evaluate the proposal to determine if it is a fit, and then it will be sent out for external evaluation by experts in the field or to the editor(s) of the appropriate series (if applicable). Following a positive evaluation, your commissioning editor will present your project to the CEU Press Editorial Board.
3
Publishing Agreement
If your proposal receives a favorable evaluation, you will receive a publishing agreement contingent upon positive peer review of the completed manuscript. If you submitted the full manuscript alongside the proposal your manuscript is ready for submission (Step number 5). At this point, you will also receive instructions on how to prepare your manuscript according to our guidelines.
4
Peer Review of Manuscript
Your full manuscript will be evaluated by experts in the field. Upon receipt of this feedback, you will likely need to make revisions and prepare a response to the reviewers’ points.
5
Technical Review
Now that you have completed all revisions and had the final version of your work approved, you are ready to submit all elements of your manuscript—think not just the body text, but also bibliographies, images, alt text, and metadata—for a technical review. One of our expert technical reviewers, a native speaker of English, will thoroughly check all aspects of your manuscript for adherence to the requirements outlined in the author instructions, looking at style, citation, image quality, and the presence of all necessary components.
6
Production
Once you have ensured that your manuscript meets all technical requirements, it’s ready to go into production! This includes copyediting, checking the typeset proofs, and preparing the index.
7
Marketing & Distribution
Once your book goes into production, the metadata is distributed with our global aggregators and shared with our market representatives and vendors directly. A few months before publication, you will fill out an author marketing questionnaire, and our marketing team gets the word out about your book through social media, newsletters, and PR outreach.
